Q) If IRS has mailed you
estimated tax forms, does that
m~ you are required to file
one of these forms?
A) You do not have to file
an estimated tax declaration for
1970 unless you meet the require-
ments as explained in the instruc-
tions that came with the estimat.
ed forms.
Estimated tax forms have been
sent to every taxpayer who filed
an estimated return for 1969 as
well as to those taxpayers who
may have been liable for one
because they had a balance due
of $40 or more ~vhen they filed
their 1968 return. The forms are
tdentKied with the taxpayer's
name, address and Social Secur-
ity number just as they a~pear in
IRS files.
,Read the instructions carefully
and if you are required to file an
estimated tax declaration, be sure
to use the forms sent you. It
will assure that your estimated
tax ,payments are properly cred-
ited to your account.
Q) I just sent in my tax return.
What records should I keep?
A) Keep the records you need
to substantiate the income and
deduction reported on your re-
turn. Cancelled checks, paid
bills, Form.s W-2 (Wage and Tax
Statement) and 1099 (U. S. In-
formation Return for Calendar
Year), bank books and similar
records in addition to a copy of
the return ~will be helpful.
Q) Will the amou.rrt my
daughter receives from • college
scholarship affect my depend-
ency claim for her?
A) No, amounts received from
a scholarship for study at an ed-
ucational institution do not *have
to be included in total support
in determining ~¢hether the sup-
port test for dependents has
been met.
Q) My wife and I both received
1040 tax form pack~ges In the
mail because we were single in
1968. We want to file • joint
return for 1969. Should we put
both name labels on the return
we file?
A) No, use only your label
since on joint returns the ac-
count is primarily identified by
the husband's Social Security
number. You should insert your
~fe's first name and middle in-
itial on your label and her Social
Security m~mber in the space
provided on the return.
To make sure you are properly
credited for a~l Fwithheld taxes
and estimated tax paymev~ts, if
any, enter the name your wife
used when she ~iled her 1968 re-
turn on the line under the ad-
dress section of the form.
Changes in address should be
given here, too.
Q) I still haven't received my
W-2. Whet should I do?
A) Ask your ~mployer about
your W-2 statement. By law,
employers ,are required .to pro-
vide withholding statements to
their employees by the end of
January. Since January 31 is a
Saturday, the deadline is Febru-
ary 2, this year.
Q) Does the fact that • child
is adopted make any difference
for dependency purposes?
A) legally adopted child is
considered your child in apply-
ing the dependency tests.
Q) Last year I sent in my re-
turn end W-2 end you figured my
tax for me. Will you still do
this with the new form?
A) Yes, IRS will compute the
tax just as it has in the past if
your income in under $5,000 and
consists of wages subject to wit'n-
holding and not more than $200
of dividends, interest, and non-
withheld ~vages. Ttds is explan-
ed on the back of the Form 1040
you received in the mail.
Q) Our community just put in
some new sidewalks and assessed
the property owners for the cost.
Is this a deductivle expense?
A) No, assessments for benvfits
that tend to increase the value of
property are not generally allow-
ed as deductions. You may, how-
ever, add the amount of your as-
sessment to the cost basis of your
property.
