I nodded. "Well, old girl, it's
like this. The man in the street,
and a few women, too, are
wondering ~tbout .the coming city
election. They wonder who's
going to run and why. Next they
,wonder what's going ¢o become of
the Air Force Station. Thirdly
is the state of the 1-90 bypass. Is
it going 'to be built this summer,
1971, or is the project to be
scrapped and a su,bway built
instead? A good hot topic right
at the moment is the mystery of
what happened ~ all the paving
on Highway 14 east.
Q threw up his hands. "Enough,

I showed him no mercy. "A.

Q nodded glumly. "You do
have a problem, Allen. ,Why don't
you pass the buck to your wife?"
It was my .turn to look glum.
"Can't do that, Q. Not now. She
passed the buck to me first."
The old man grunted and fresh-
ened up his chew until it was
about the size of a hockey puck.
YIe tucked it under his iongue
and hunched there like a dozing
bullfrog.
"What about this here city
election," he mumbled. "Itow's it
shape up, Allen?"
I looked solemn. "Well, Q, the
guys serving now have all said
they've served their time in hell
and want out. I imagine ~hey
would serve again if they were
drafted. It's a thankless job, Q.
You get a lot of headaches for

Q spit a good five iron shot
down the creek, wiped ,his chin
and said wisely, "You said it,
Allen. I put in my time and it was
no picnic. Think it was about '06
when I served."
I nodded. "I could tell you were
council timber, Q. It's ~vritten all
over you. You'd look good in city
hall although we'd have to get
you a stock tank for a spittoon."
Q turned the color of a pair of
red flannels after a rough win~er
and his chew disappeared from
view. Ite leaped to his feet and
headed downstream, turning che

disappeared into the bushes.
"Adios, pard. I'll write your name
in next month."
