If there weren't a Fourth of July, we would have had to invent it.
The Fourth of July is admirably situated in the middle of the
summer, just right for family picnics and fishing and horseshoe
pitching and wading in the creek. ,
The Fourth is customarily associated with the happy bedlam of
children at play and the contented burping of chicken-stuffad adults
as they fall asleep in the shade of a tree.
On a higher plane, the Fourth of July provides us at least one day in
the year to be unashamedly patriotic. Without apology, we can forget
the differenceswhich may separate us by creed, color or any other
area of controversy.
It is a great and proud nation,, these fifty states, this United States,
despite what our detractors say. May each of us this day remind
ourselves of the birthright it has afforded us. May we remember the
cost of freedom and the cost we must continue to pay as did those
before us.
We hope this Fourth of July is a happy one for you. We also hope it
will be a safe and sane one.
And over the noise of the celebration, may we hear the scream of
the eagle.
