Fred Eugene "Gene" Snell, 77, Sundance, Wyoming, passed away August 7, 2003 at his home in Sundance. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at the old high school gym in Sundance with Rev. Ed Bollack officiating, burial followed at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Sundance. Fred Eugene "Gene" Snell was born November 24, 1925 at Pedro, South Dakota, the oldest child of George and Johanna (Bastian) Snell. Gene attended country schools through eighth grade. He worked for ranchers in the Phillip and Pedro area and for Haakon County at Phillip. He came to the Black Hills in 1946 and worked for the Hart Sawmill near Hulett, Wyoming. He then drove truck from 1947 until the early 1960s, in later years owning his own trucks. He operated a garage east of Sundance, then for a brief time moved the shop into Sundance. Later he expanded his business into a wrecker service and salvage yard, which he owned and operated until 1995 when he retired. January 22, 1948 he married Jessie Mitts. They were divorced in 1962. On January 10, 1970 he married Helen "Honey~ Roark Lake. Gene loved traveling, checking out old vehicles and equipment along the way, but his first love in life was visiting with people. On his travels he would strike up a conversation with strangers only quite often to find out they would know the same person, even though he might be miles from home. Gene is survived by his step-children, David Lake and his wife Linda of Anaheim, California; Peggy Lake Westover and her husband Don of Lakewood, Colorado; Robert Lake and his wife Donna of Ruckersville, Virginia; Jack Lake and his wife Janet of Sundance; Sue Lake of Lake- wood, Colorado; twelve step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grand- children. He is also survived by a sister, Juanita Goodsell and her husband Carrol of Hot Springs, South Dakota; Sam Snell and his wife Irene of Gillette, Wyoming and Paul Snell and his wife Bobbi of Cedaredge, Colorado; Kenny Snell and his wife Helen of Big Pine, California and a special friend, Shirley Frasier of Spearfish, South Dakota. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Honey, in 1996. A memorial has been established to the Sundance Fire Department and Sundance Ambulance Service Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance, Wyoming is in charge of arrangements. Rolland Ray Hartman 1952 -2003 Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Sundance for Rolland Ray Hartman, 51, Sundance, who died August 4 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD. Memorials are established for the Cardio-Therapy unit at Crook County Memorial Hospital and the Sundance Volunteer Fire Depart- ment. Rolland was born February 11, 1952 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Raymond and Lois Hartman. He grew up in Beemer, Nebraska, and graduated from Beemer High School in 1970. He attended Chadron State Col- lege for two years. He worked for the telephone company and his work brought him to Sundance in 1973. He was married in Sundance on July 26, 1975 to Jill Hooper and they lived all their married life in Sundance. Barbara Dennis Porter 1926 - 2003 Barbara Dennis Porter, 76, former resident of the Crook and Campbell County area, died August 9, 2003 at a long term care facility in Denver, Colorado. She was born August 29, 1926 at Gillette, Wyo- ming the daughter of Lewis F. and Marjorie Frisbee Dennis. Her grow- ing-up years were spent at the Dennis' Little Missouri Ranch in the New Haven area. Her elementary education was received at rural schools in the vicinity and she attended high school in Gillette and Sundance. In 1965 she married Fred Porter of Cheyenne and they lived at various times in Cheyenne, Gillette and Denver. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, and her parents. She is survived by her three children of previous marriages: Marjorie Childs of Yankton, South Dakota; Steven Cronce of Vallejo, Califor- nia; and Patricia Clark in Denver, Colorado; a brother, Raymond Dennis of Hulett; a sister, Dorothy Soule in Gillette; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
