Page 11 The Sundance Times | Eighth graders undefeated BY ANDREA HUMPHREY The Sundance 8th grade volleyball team kept their bid for an undefeated season intact this weekend by winning the Gillette A Volleyball Tournament. Th e Lady Bulldogs went into the tournament with a 13-0 record. The first team the Bulldogs faced was Buffalo, and they came away with a 21- i 13, 21-9 victory. Maddy Stoddard had a tremendous game serving for the Lady Bulldogs as she scored 12 pts. Next the ; girls faced the home team Twin Spruce A Eagles. After a close tr 21-17 game, they dominated the second game by a score of , 21-7. In the championship match Sundance would face a "i, familiar foe in the Douglas Bearcats. The girls had met the ., Bearcats twice in tough matches in the spring AAU volleyball .. season, with the Bearcats wining both times in 3 sets. This time the Lady Bulldogs came out on top 21-18, 23-21. Setters and backside hitters Jaslyn Seeley and Molly O'Connor led ,:, the team with numerous assists. Middle hitter Teila Mcln- erney, and middle and backside hitters Haley Marchant and Katie Rathbun all hit, blocked, and played the net very well all tournament. Outside hitters Maddy Stoddard and Signe I Simpson were consistent all tournament and both played ex- cellent defense. Rachel Kuhl, who played in her first game f of the season, came off the bench and provided great play at e' _ crucial times during the games. The team served and played , defense extremely well throughout the tournament. The Lady . Bulldogs are committed to playing just as tough through the remainder of their season, and look forward to hosting the a district toumament on October 12. Northern Hills high school athletes sport pink for cancer in October Regional Medical Clinic is teaming up with area athletes m October to fight breast cancer with the Third Annu- al Pink Tape Against Cancer event. For a small donation, athletes can choose pink tape for their pre-game wraps, which will be provided by Re- gional Sports Medicine ath- letic trainers Kristy Eastman (Spearfish), Shawn Mechling (Belle Fourche), Stephanie Gallagher (Lead-Deadwood) and Sonnie Palm (Hulett, Sundance and Upton). "It's hard to believe we're in our third year doing the Pink Tape Against Cancer games, but it continues to be a lot of fun for our athletes and gets them involved in their com- munities," Athletic Trainer Kristy Eastman said. "1 am always impressed by the level of commitment the ath- letes show by helping others through this event and I'm excited to see how their 'pink' nights turn out this year." Athletic Trainer Stepha- hie Gallagher added "like so many communities, the Northern Hills have been affected by cancer and it's great to see our athletes and coaches take such an active role to raise awareness."
