. i {'age 2 - Thursday, October 17, 2002 II. Now and Then By FL 0 YD EMERSON ' . Dear Reader (if you're not over go): :--:* Have you ever wondered 277:;vhat life is like after the age of ::::07 :::-*. I'm about to tell you because I :*em 91 going on 92. :;::: By the time most of you are 90 o;*:ou probably will have lost your :;:'modesty in hospitals. If you :, :: ;Baven't you soon will. ".'-" That's because you'll "-* Irobably need help when you take a bath or get dressed. Before your first assisted bath you may worry a lot. If you are 0ale you are afraid that the young woman who helps you will giggle when she sees you naked. You know that your muscles are small and flat and that your tomach is not flat anymore. ', ' Then there's the matter of i;tepping in and out of the shower or tub with the woman holding on to you so you won't fall. When you need help in dressing it's ' embarrassing when a young woman helps you put on your pants. You'll get used to it though. If you have a nurse she will ask you every time she calls: =have you had a bowel movement today." You will learn to say yes or no in a nonchalant way. Putting on socks is the hardest part of assisted dressing because you can't give much help and your uncut toenails get in the way. That means that you will have to get someone to trim them. You have really crossed the age line when you can't trim your own nails.. There are many benefits though if you live in an assisted living home like I do. I live in Garden Hills on South 34th street. I have made many new friends here, some elderly residents like me and several younger women who take care of us day by day and night by night. I've learned a lot about today's social values from these young women. I don't like some of what I have learned but then I remember when I was young in the 192Os oldsters didn't approve of us. The girls' short skirts and bobbed hair offended them but bathing suits still covered much. My table mates at Garden Hills bring me great joy at mealtime. Three are former teachers. We enjoy bantering each other. It seems that I have known them several years not months. They are more than table mates. They are friends too. This proves to me that we can make new friends even over 90. So the wheel turns. Each generation disapproves of its Inside ,ouoo people. When you are over 90 you sometimes forget that you , were once young too. Your Sundance Times...
