IRS SENDS CARD
EXPLAINING NEW 1040
Cheyenne, Wyoming --- Each
of the 18 million taxpayers in
the United States ~who filed the
now dis.contimmd card 1040 A
Form last year will receive a post-
card next week cx,plaining the
change to the new consolidated
1040 Form, the Internal Revenue
Service announced today.
This year all taxpayers will re-
ceive a larger, complete tax pack-
age that includes the one-page
basis 1040 and additional pages
or schedules which may or may
not be used according to the tax-
payers' needs.
Past 1040A users will find that
except for a few lines the new
1040 asks for the same informa-
,lion as the old card corm and
Chat ,they probably will not need
to ~ill out more than one sheet
of paper ~o make out their re-
turns, the card says.
In the past, taxpayers who us-
ed the 1040A could not take ad-
vantage of certain tax credits or
exclusions and could not itemize
their deductions. A principal
reason for making the change to
the new form is to enable tax-
payers to take full advantage of
the tax benefits the law provides,
the postcard says.
~Most taxpayers should receive
their individual tax forms and in-
structions by mail the first week
of January.
